The Hungarian government’s principles regarding citizenship are based on the Latin expression “jus sanguinis“, meaning “right of blood“. This means that if you can trace your family lineage back to Hungary, you may be able to live, work, and study in any of the 28 countries throughout the European Union with no restrictions.
There are currently three ways to apply for or recover Hungarian citizenship using your family lineage.
If you know that you have an ancestor from Hungary, or if you or a family member at some point lost their Hungarian citizenship, we would be happy to discuss your application options with you. Below you will find a brief summary of what is required in order to apply.
